The most successful nonprofit membership programs balance donor engagement and benefits with sustainable fundraising returns that keep organisations thriving. Yet while many groups may recognize the value of membership programs, it can be difficult to know where to begin — or how to improve upon a program already in place.

Together with Amanda Nelson, an Associate Professor at Virginia Tech and former Deputy Director of Development in charge of memberships at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, we will explore how to build a membership program that structures meaningful engagements with your organisation for donors while enabling you to benefit from predictable, stable revenue over the long term.

Amanda Nelson

For over eleven years, Amanda worked for the world-renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York where she oversaw membership programs, government relations, corporate sponsorships, and foundation support. At Ailey, she led her team in the development and implementation of extensive and successful fundraising campaigns that both expanded the donor pool and deepened donor relationships. Now, as a consultant for arts organizations, Amanda facilitates planning processes and guides organizations through both internal and external campaigns to build awareness and garner support. Amanda serves on the board of the First Virginia Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). In 2013, she joined the faculty at Virginia Tech to create and establish a new graduate degree program in Arts Leadership. At Virginia Tech, Amanda teaches a range of theatre and arts courses, including arts leadership, arts advocacy, arts marketing, development (fundraising), strategic management, and human resources in the arts. She holds a PhD in Drama from Tufts University, an MA in Drama from San Francisco State University, and a BA in Drama from the University of California at Irvine.
